On The Waterfront - In Dusseldorf

The riverside in Dusseldorf is dominated by the Rheinturm, a 240m high communictions tower completed in 1981.  The lift takes just 45 seconds to reach the viewing platform which give spectacular views over the city.  Immediately  below is the parliament building of the North Rhine-Westphalia state. The Landtag building, shaped in circles and arcs, opened in 1988 and was built to the design of architects Eller, Maier, Moser, Walter and Partners.

In the other direction, one looks down on the Medienhafen (Media Harbour) a Salford Quays type redevelopment of some of the city's disused dockland. Without doubt, the landmark buildings are Frank Gehry's Neuer Zollhof completed in 1998. The three buildings are finished in contrasting facings of brick, plaster and stainless steel. The facades and floors lean at different angles creating a fascinating result.

On the opposite quay, the facade of Will Alsop's simple tower block, The Colorium, is relieved by the use of multi coloured panels whilst next door but one huge figures clamber up the side of the buildings to wave triumphantly from the rooftops.

Dusseldorf boasts a lengthy riverside esplanade flanked with bars restaurants and cafes. It provides a popular promenade for residents and tourists alike and at times is thronged with strolling people.

Boarbank Hall

Some years ago I was commissioned to build a 1 : 50 scale model of the chapel at Boarbank Hall  to demonstrate proposed alterations.
Boarbank is an Augustinian community near Grange Over Sands and includes a nursing home and guest house.
The Boarbank Hall web site gives more information and includes photographs of the chapel. http://www.boarbankhall.org.uk/index.htm

The model was constructed largely without a roof in order that the interior might be easily viewed.

As can be seen, the chapel is "L" shaped to accommodate the sisters in one wing and guests in the other, each having a view of the altar.
